Job Summary

These full-time faculty positions in the department of Biology will start in January or August of 2026. These individuals will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of the university, including teaching undergraduate courses such as Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs, General Biology and lab, and/or upper division courses in candidates’ area of expertise. Additionally, the individuals will contribute to student advising, serve on departmental committees, and engage in research appropriate for undergraduates. At Saint Mary’s the standard teaching load is 22-24 credit hours per contract year, and these individuals will be expected to teach this load covering foundational and upper-level areas of undergraduate biology lecture and lab courses, as well as appropriate courses in the Saint Mary's University general education program.

Salary Range

Assistant Professor: $60k - $68k

Main Duties & Responsibilities

• This individual will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of the university, teaching undergraduate biology courses and labs including General Biology and upper division courses in the applicant’s specialty. Preference will be given to applicants that can teach Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs, General Biology and labs.  
• At Saint Mary’s the standard teaching load is 22-24 credit hours per contract year and this individual will be expected to teach this load, covering foundational and upper-level areas of undergraduate biology lecture and lab courses, as well as appropriate courses in the Saint Mary's University general education program. 
• The Biology Department at Saint Mary's provides students a hands-on learning environment that empowers students to chart their own path to a career. All majors in the biology department conduct their own, authentic, independent research projects. The candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an active research program to mentor students in research that culminates in a student thesis.
• Other responsibilities include student advising, service on departmental and faculty committees, and engaging in research appropriate for undergraduates.

Experience and Education Requirements

• A doctoral degree (preferred) or terminal degree in a Biology, Physiology, or Exercise Physiology related program.
• Experience or evidence of potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate biology.
• Active engagement in research amenable toward mentoring undergraduates and potential for leading to extramural funding and co-publication with students.

Essential Knowledge & Skills

• Applicants with a Ph.D. or terminal degree in a Biology, Physiology, or Exercise Physiology related program earned by the start date are strongly preferred. Experience or evidence of potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate biology is required. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to teach Anatomy and Physiology and have a broad Biology background to be capable of teaching courses in our General Biology series. These candidates will be expected to actively mentor students in research that culminates in a student thesis. The Biology Department at Saint Mary's is seeking colleagues who are interested in collaboration and will provide students a hands-on learning environment that empowers students to chart their own path to a career. All majors in the biology department conduct their own, authentic, ethical, independent research projects. Our faculty are experts in both biological research and undergraduate instruction so students receive high-quality teaching, direct interaction with instructors and quality research mentorship.

Physical Demands

• Light work. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities.
